The Year 6 Conference

We had The Year 6 Conference. It was really fun. I learnt about the way i work as an individual and in a team. We did lots of different activities which would test the way we worked as a team. Our team had some ups and downs but overall was pretty successful.

My favourite challenge was the newspaper and tape one. We had 7 mins to make a tower out of the newspaper and masking tape. Our group was very good apart from the fact that we need to listen much more. Our group said to not add another roll of newspaper ad someone added another and our whole tower collapsed. This is why listening to you teammates is really important. Our group then worked on that and it became much stronger together.

Overall, The year 6 conference was really successful.

Elephants And Their Adaptaions

Have you ever wanted to know just how cool elephants have adapted to environment, physically and structurally?

Hi! I’m Ellie!

Today I will be telling you about my species. ELEPHANTS! Our Scientific name is Loxodonta. We are mammals.

Our Physical appearance comes across as quite dangerous when seeing us in real life, but we all have different personalities. Yes some aren’t so nice, but just like you humans we are usually friendly! African, Asian and Indian actually appear different. African have longer tusks and ears. Speaking of tusks elephants unfortunately 20,000 get hunted for tusks every year, around 100 a day!! Elephants tusks are made of ivory, which Chinese hunt as it is extremely valuable.

You can usually find me and my herd around swamps, forests and grasslands. We drink anything we can find! We eat grass, wheat, bushes, fruit and tree bark! We all love to eat! I personally love pineapples especially when I am sick because it usually helps me get better.

Some structural adaptations of my fellow elephants are, that we have big ears that keep us cool. We have big feet and bodies so we can reach the trees. We always love eating as well. We have special blood vessels in our ears that keep us even cooler!

We always stay in herds because we feel safer like that. We sometime go in swamps that other animals can’t go if we feel threatened. We use our trunks to sniff the air, blow dust, pull down twigs and leaves, pull up grass, and suck up water to squirt into our mouthes.

I hope you learnt something about me and my type! Bye bye now!

What is your favourite animal?

The Year 5 Production Of Hanging On To The Bottom Of The World

“ISN’T SHE BEAUTIFUL BRUCE! SHE REALLY IS VERY VERY BEAUTIFUL BRUCE!”Last night we had our last performance or ‘Hanging On To The Bottom Of The World’. I was one of the four tea ladies. I was to one called Agnes.

The production was extremely fun and I wish we did more than 2 shows. My favourite show was the second one (the evening one). I thought every got into it a bit more and put on their characters better. Not being bias, I thought the tea ladies were the best! I had to ask an old man if they needed the bathroom!! The bridal scene was also really good. No one forgot lines etc. I think EVERYONE used courage to simply go on stage and put them.

A challenge for me was to memorise all my lines and to do them well. I do drama outside of school so I didn’t find there was too much to worry about but I thought it was really cool how my peers put on a show as well even though it was new for them.

Some highlights were accidentally asking my teachers dad is he needed to go to the bathroom, when I almost dropped 4 tea cups and when Georgie walked off with Kobe’s head dragging in the sand!!

I thought that Georgie played the role of a ‘sweeper’ very well. She really got into her character of being grumpy! She made it quite funny but made it that everyone can still understand what is going on.

A special thank goes out to Miss Quodling, Tim, Liv, Emma Ingles and all the specialist teachers for being so flexible. Also a shoutout to Grayhem for making the sand around \Australia so amazing!

My Favourite Book Chat Book From This Year

We were told to write a blog post about our favourite book chat book. My mind went straight to ‘Because Of Winn Dixie By Kate Di’ Camillo. I may have not finished it yet but I read over half of it. It is a very heart warming story. It is about this stray dog getting into trouble and a grocery store and India (Opal) saves him before he gets into to much trouble. Although her dad (who is a preacher) said she doesn’t need a dog, she quotes him and say he always says to help less fortunate. They end up keeping him, and all grow very attached to Winn Dixie. He can’t last a second without Opal. I’m not going to spoil anymore, so as i’m sure you’re intrigued, you are going to have to read it yourself!! It is quite an easy read, I recommend it for confident year 2 readers or 3-6s.  As you can tell by the rating on this book, others enjoyed it too!!

This term our topic was ‘The Hard Road Ahead’.

We went to Sovereign Hill which is where the gold rush happened. I really enjoyed this topic because i hadn’t learnt about it before. Some things i learnt were how badly the Chinese were treated in the 1850’s. The white people were very racist and thought they one upped them. Which is not true. I also never knew that the Eureka Stockade was a thing!. I now know what a gold license is as well. Some important dates in australia’s history are… 18 51 gold was discovered in Ballarat.

in 1770 captain cook discovered Australia

in 1788 the first fleet arrived in Port Jackson

in 1854 the Eureka Stockade

in 1901 Australia became its own nation

and many more (:

I hope we get to look at this topic next year etc so i can learn even more about it!

Hard Road Ahead

Hard Road Ahead was a very interesting topic to do. At first I didn’t know ANYTHING and I mean ANYTHING. Now I know so much more and can answer a lot of questions about The Gold Rush and how it affected Australia. How people were very sure the would become lucky. How there was a lot of violence on the gold fields. I even got to see the mines at camp. I also realised how it was for children back then. How if you went to the “poor” school you were called ragged. If you went to the rich school now it would be an extremely poor one. Mining was a very dangerous job and you were risking your life every single time you went down there. You were risking a lot. When I was doing the schools program at camp, the teacher always said to not marry a miner because there is a good chance you will become single when the rocks topple and so does his heart! The Hard Road Ahead was great and I learnt so much!!

Toonalook

Toonalook

The best camp ever.

I wake up, I barely slept last night because I was to excited. Toonalook, 4 days, 3 nights.

I get on the bus. 4 hours to go  guess!!

What did I like the most?

The boat ride. We went super fast (about 30 knots.) We went in donuts and swerved really really fast. I was so tempted to just jump into the water!! And then i remembered it was 10 degrees and i passed on that idea!

What did you find the most challenging?

Trying to spot Koalas while bike riding! I saw one Koala, everyone else saw at least 2. I’m just not that good at multi tasking! (:

What did you learn about yourself?

I learnt that i really like kayaking! I really enjoyed doing the race even though we came 2nd last! Is better than last I guess (:

What character strengths did you use during you time there?

I used courage, I thought the bike ride was going to be really hard, but i went on it and it was smooth sailing. I used knowledge for the photo rally which is basically where you get a photo of something and you have to find it somewhere in the property. So we had to try to remember where that photo was. My group came 2nd!!

I honestly LOVED the food! My favourite was probably the burgers (which I had 3rds in!!). My favourite desert had to be the apple crumble! I wish i could have seconds but they weren’t allowed, Which got me thinking, why can we always have second of dinner but not dessert? (:

Toonalook was the best camp i have ever been on and i am super super super excited to go back next year!

Traditions

Everyone has different beliefs. Some celebrate jewish traditions, some idian, italian, greek, the list is endless. I celebrate Christmas, Easter, New years and at school we celebrate Chinese New Year. At christmas I usually go down to my beach house, or with my whole family at my grandparents house. Some of my cousins who live in Queensland couldn’t make it this year so my family and I are going to our beach house. We always have a big tree and decorations out side and inside of our house. My mum and dad put presents under the tree the night before so we can’t poke at them!!

We celebrate Easter. My mum hides chocolates in the garden and my brother and i always run to find them. After we find them we have to make it fair and have the same amount of eggs. I stash them in my pockets and pretend that’s all i got! (:

New years I usually stay at home and simply celebrate the new year coming

what traditions do you celebrate?

My Avatar

Hi!!

This is my avatar I made. It isn’t identical but is similar to what I look like. I have blue eyes and blonde-ish hair. I am wearing a frilly sort of shirt because i just bought one like it! Usually i am wearing sportswear or casual when i’m not at school.

Have you made your own avatar?

Information Books

WHAT MAKES A GOOD INFORMATION BOOK?

A good information book needs the following: Firstly, you need clear information that won’t confuse anyone of anything. It also need clear pictures. For example, a tree can’t look like a mushroom, because then it isn’t clear. It needs its sources, for example, you can’t say that this post was sourced by you because I wrote this! It needs interesting information, otherwise your readers will find it boring and move on to another book.

WHAT WAS MY FAVOURITE SHORTLISTED BOOK? WHY?

My favourite shortlisted book was Sorry Day. It brings a really powerful meaning to the picture. It makes you actually feel something which is why this is my favourite. It is still an information book, but it explains it as a story which makes the story really clear. The pictures were really good and explained the story. It also had an index, its sources etc.
